Meth in Ottumwa

As I was working on this project, a docuseries came out on Discovery-plus called  The Queen of Meth.  It turns out actor Tom Arnold’s family called Ottumwa ‘home.’  Yep. They’re from there.

So, I watched the series…and holy crap. His sister is known as the ‘Queen of Meth’ in Ottumwa. From around 1986 to 1991  Lori Arnold ran a five-state drug ring, running meth into the Midwest from California.  She went to prison for it – twice.

Tom says – quote, “My sister created the meth world.”

They talk about how her dealings with methamphetamine ruined the place for generations; many kids grew up with parents addicted to meth. This meth craze in Ottumwa started in 1986 and Jeanette’s family lived around 1987-88-89 timeframe.

So, it’s safe to say Roy’s job as a drug and alcohol counselor and manager kept him busy in Ottumwa.  Also, when he’s rambling about people burning meth in a barrel, it wasn’t a far-fetched story coming from a man who ‘went crazy.’

Jeanne and Roy married in December 1994.

Tom Arnold comes up again later in the story.  Juanita Hootman, Jeanne’s ad agency business partner, was his cousin. Tom Arnold and Roseanne Barr were married in January of 1990 and made appearances in town. The couple moved to nearby Eldon, Iowa, and opened a restaurant.
