The Toll Podcast is a True Crime Podcast where the journalist carefully examines the impact a violent crime or traumatic event has on families and their communities. The podcast is hosted by an investigative journalist, Nancy Simpson, who has been covering stories for 20 years and is a survivor of childhood abuse and neglect. Season 1 is a deep dive into the case of Shirley Jane Rose, an unsolved murder that took place in Springfield, Missouri in 1975. Nancy speaks to those who knew Shirley Jane Rose, as well as community members,  to discover how she lived, recount her last moments and works to uncover many stories along the way of how the little girl’s disappearance impacted those close to Shirley.

Season One

October 17th, 1975 nine-year-old Shirley Jane Rose vanished. Her body was found almost two months later on December 13, 1975, in a shallow grave near a local reservoir. Local police identified several persons of interest and conducted numerous interviews, but no charges were ever filed in connection to Shirley Jane’s murder. This case remains unsolved.

THE CREATORs

Nancy Simpson describes herself as a storyteller. She is the co-creator, author and host of The Toll. Nancy is an accomplished journalist who has earned many prestigious awards for investigative news, breaking news, and severe weather coverage including twelve Edward R. Murrow awards and. She has been recognized 6 times for “Best Radio Newscast” by the Missouri Broadcasters Association. 

Nancy started at KTTS in 1998 as a news anchor and investigative reporter and worked her way up to assistant news director. In 2018, she became part of the KTTS Morning Show team. Because of her love for storytelling, Nancy decided to dive into this true-crime podcast project.

Nancy lives in Nixa, MO with her husband and two children. They’re big St. Louis Cardinals fans and love to attend games. Nancy loves spending time with her family, cooking and listening to Miranda Lambert.

Jay Lashley is the Program Director and afternoon drive host of Power 96.5. He is also the co-creator, music director, and executive producer of The Toll. Jay has been listening fervently to podcasts since the days you had to download them to an iPod, and he’s quick to tell anyone who will listen that he was a fan of podcasts before many people even knew what they were.

Jay has been a musician and producer for 20 years and has had original music featured on MTV, CW, VH1, Fox Sports, and used by brands such as SeaDo and American Airlines.
